Another photo game at IGF 09
A new photography game was one of this year’s IGF participants:
Snapshot is a game that revolves around the ability to change the world through photographs. Take control of Pic and a magical (yet very scientific) camera that can grab objects right out of the world and store them in photos. Stick photos back into the world to change the environment to guide Pic to safety.
It sounds like a unique game dynamic and great metaphor, although disappointingly it sounds like they will be satisfied by the former and less interested the later. But I could be wrong– an of course, there’s nothing stopping someone from remediating the idea into a richer game, if I’m not.

Modding as Practice-based research
Dan Pinchbeck wants to explore different types of FPS gameplay– and he’s doing so by creating a series of mods. He points out what I have argued as well, that the practice of game making reveals relevant information in terms of the practicalities of production, the expectations of the game community, and the intricacies of gameplay. His explorations include Korsakovia, Dear Esther, Antlion Soccer, and Conscientious Objector.

Artxgame
Things like this make me second guess not going to the GDC this year.

Critical Gaming
The Critical-Gaming Network site has some very good bits, but my favorite is the excellent, thorough reviews of alternative games like Eden and Everday Shooter. The reviews provide not only solid technical deconstructions, but in many cases alternative (sometimes contentious) reconstructions.
