05/08/2003 Archived Entry: "Why hackers are more like painters than scientists"

Why hackers are more like painters than scientists: Hackers and Painters, by Paul Graham. During a seminar on creative process this term, I came to the realization that my programming (or "hacking") process is very much like painting-- piece by piece, letting the programming determine my path, trying out ideas and watching the program evolve. By contrast, my writing process is very different: entirely iterative, based on many passes over the initial draft, first for structure, then for grammar, then for style. It's algorithmic almost. Very scientific. The writing, not the programming.
