06/20/2005 Archived Entry: "DiGRA conference wrap up"

Well, looks like that's it for another couple of years: DiGRA 2005 "Changing Views: Worlds in Play" has wrapped up in Vancouver, and with it the PoV Alternative Games Exhibition.

* Note to self: organizing an event and attending a conference appear to be mutually exclusive.

* Three is a good number of papers to see at one session.

* Reliable volunteers are worth their weight in gold.

* There can be too much of a good thing. Free wine, sometimes one of such good things.

Like all conferences, I'm leaving with the strong desire to write several new papers, or make a game. I heard a lot of positive response to the conference, but I was wearing my green badge, so that's perhaps a suspect observation. Hope everyone got a chance to check out the games in PoV (still haven't seen someone really spend a ton of time engaging in the games, but that's at it is. I only got 20 min in before I got wisked away...just too much to do in such a short time). Seems like it's more of a game showroom...if you like it, you can have it for home/lab/next exhibition. Working with the artists and curators was just swell-- a very cool group. I thought it came together...room for improvement, but given the available resources, pretty damn good.

Enough chit-chat: more photos.
