07/15/2005 Archived Entry: "What about robots"

"Robots are, at heart, philosophical objects. When we regard them, with their weird mix of humanlike and alien behavior, we meditate on the nature of ourselves." (from Collision Detection)

Yup.

Babylonian Talmud, in Sanhedrin 65b:

Rava said: "If the righteous wished, they could create a world, for it is written:
'Your inequities are a barrier between you and your God.'"

For Rava created a man and sent him to Rabbi Zeira. The rabbi spoke to him [the man] but he did not answer. Then he [Zeira] said: "You are from the pietists. Return to your dust." (Translation: Moshe Idel.)

Just another take on the whole robot as philosophical object thingy. Oh and thanks for coming to the wedding, had a hoot. Toodles,

Jerry

In this story... more interested in Rava. I suspect that's not the intention, though. I think Rava's motives are more complex than are originally presented (although perhaps less grand.) To be fair, as a rabbi, I'd assume you'd be more interested in grand narratives...

Enjoyed myself greatly at the wedding, but was tremendously overwhelmed. Fortunately, this was also good. Have well over 100 photos to share someday. With you, I'd imagine. Rest your eyes.
