09/22/2006 Archived Entry: "Canadian Game Studies Symposium (1)"

The CGSA symposium started yesterday morning at the Tel building at York University. Unfortunately, with 'Artcade' setup and organization taking up most of yesterday, I didn't have the chance to form anything other than an impression of the event so far... so, looseleaf thoughts:

+ It's impressive to see such a large group of researchers attending the event-- you really get the sense of a significant amount of work being done. The range of theoretical interests and projects is impressively diverse: perhaps this is another facet of Canadian 'multiculturalism'. Is this plurality beneficial; or are we just all over the map, with little hope of commonality and exchange? I'll be giving more thought to the multicultural metaphor as the symposium continues...

+ Sean Arden is currently entering {the last hour stretch} of his 24h performance 'Pass or Fail'. Maia Engeli and I came by at 4am to verify the ongoing nature of the performance. That's full value of the work! {note the timestamp is incorrect -- I still had it set to PST. It should read 2:26}

+ The Artcade had its opening party last night-- very well attended and active. Probably the highest level of participation I have seen at an interactive exhibition, which is wonderful. Lots of pictures and video to come (once I get back home and have a chance to upload).

+ I am a guitar hero.
