12/12/2006 Archived Entry: "Popular Science and Fembots"

Popular Science ran this (sadly far too short) article on Fembots in August. Although their 'fembot' (sorry... 'gynoid'... ugh, that sounds awful) gallery leaves something to be desired. Come on, Lisa is *not* a robot in Weird Science! (sorry, have to disagree with Wikipedia on that one). And what's with the detached faces?

The article takes a somewhat bizarre turn into attempting to map the changing role of the so-called fembot (of course, this includes robots of any gender performing domestic chores) to changing social roles. Not particularly convincing, but whatever makes you feel better about the uneasy robot subtexts of power and domination. Everyone loves a good slave, and surely there's nothing creepy about naming your roomba after your favorite porn star.

Also, evil Maria is not a cyborg...OK, I'll stop now...
