The good news- I'm coordinating the Girl Power: Computers and Creativity summer camp for grades 6/7 at Simon Fraser University, and it's starting to look pretty cool. Now, does that mean if I think it's cool, then it's definitely *not* cool...hmm...
The bad news- I've finally given up on the DigitalGirl initiative for Digital Eve. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's much of a Digital Eve to resign from! I haven't heard a peep from the other Vancouver executive members in months, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the works in terms of events or initiatives. *Sigh* Has the passion really seeped out of the women/technology debate, or is this still an economy issue (still?)
On a related note, my advisor asked me the other day if I could suggest who may be the leading researcher on the issue of women's involvement in digital games. I should know that, right? It's an important issue. I can suggest Laurel or Turkle for girls, but for women, I'm just drawing a blank...

Thursday, May 8, 2003Why hackers are more like painters than scientists: Hackers and Painters, by Paul Graham. During a seminar on creative process this term, I came to the realization that my programming (or "hacking") process is very much like painting-- piece by piece, letting the programming determine my path, trying out ideas and watching the program evolve. By contrast, my writing process is very different: entirely iterative, based on many passes over the initial draft, first for structure, then for grammar, then for style. It's algorithmic almost. Very scientific. The writing, not the programming.

Sunday, May 4, 2003I've added the big list of modification-related articles/sites to my player-as-producer research links. The list includes generic articles, as well as links and related web materials related to a few specific examples I'm watching: Velvet-Strike, Collective Detective, the Sims, and persistent world performances. If there's anything obvious I'm missing, by all means, please let me know.
