More business griping: we placed a furniture order online with Leon's Furniture, and it's been an absolute nightmare. Without getting into the specifics (like why we still don't have our couch 2 months later), here's a useful bit of information, finally, after being refered to the Leons in Ottawa: the number for their head office: 1-800-608-7301.

Why you'd have a 1-800 number, and then not put it anywhere online, I don't know-- but look, problem solved.

Tiny videos from CGSA at York!
Iron Man: I believe that's Dominic Arsenault, Milena Droumeva, (Beth Dillon?), (Trent Cruz?). Sorry, it's dark! And Jim Andrews as the guitar hero.
Pass or Fail: Video tidbits from Sean Arden's performance.
Ms. Pac Mondrian: Yes it's Ms. Pac Mondrian herself performing at the Artcade party.

The CGSA symposium started yesterday morning at the Tel building at York University. Unfortunately, with 'Artcade' setup and organization taking up most of yesterday, I didn't have the chance to form anything other than an impression of the event so far... so, looseleaf thoughts:

+ It's impressive to see such a large group of researchers attending the event-- you really get the sense of a significant amount of work being done. The range of theoretical interests and projects is impressively diverse: perhaps this is another facet of Canadian 'multiculturalism'. Is this plurality beneficial; or are we just all over the map, with little hope of commonality and exchange? I'll be giving more thought to the multicultural metaphor as the symposium continues...

+ Sean Arden is currently entering {the last hour stretch} of his 24h performance 'Pass or Fail'. Maia Engeli and I came by at 4am to verify the ongoing nature of the performance. That's full value of the work! {note the timestamp is incorrect -- I still had it set to PST. It should read 2:26}

+ The Artcade had its opening party last night-- very well attended and active. Probably the highest level of participation I have seen at an interactive exhibition, which is wonderful. Lots of pictures and video to come (once I get back home and have a chance to upload).

+ I am a guitar hero.

The Canadian Game Studies Association's symposium Artcade is both an evening social event and an opportunity for Canadian/Canadian-resident game artists to showcase dynamic and diverse game artworks. The CGSA will play host to a range of works including a machinima screening, live performance, game demos and of course playable digital games.

CGSA ARTCADE launch party: Thursday, September 21st, 2006
York University TEL Building
Starts at 7pm
Open to Guests

Here is information on some of the artists scheduled to showcase work/perform/make merry at the Artcade:

Prize Budget for Boys Calderoids & PacMondrian

   Maia Engeli Dollhouse

   Jim Munroe Pleasure Circuit Overload

   Sean Arden Pass or Fail

  Heather Kelley Lapis

  Lynn Hughes/French Girls group CUBiD

   Jim Andrews Arteroids

  Jonathan Mak everydayShooter

  Myfanwy Ashmore Mario Battle No.1

  yumi -Co. (absent) CuteXdoom

  Barry Smylie (absent) Circ

  Joe McKay (absent) select works

And so my utopian dream of bringing together Canuck art geeks inches onward. In unrelated news, a tiny Mary Flanagan and her giant joystick appear in the print version of September's Edge magazine, giving some legitimacy to its claim as a magazine of videogame culture (which, yes, does go beyond your local EB).

Jonah Brucker-Cohen at Concordia University, Montreal, September 11, 2006

The Oboro Gallery is opening an exhibition this Saturday of works by net artist Jonah Brucker-Cohen. As an appetizer (one would imagine) Jonah gave us a talk and intro to his work and methodology yesterday at Concordia's Visual Arts building (the old one). Nice to see some of my favorite pieces such as Police State, and a couple of the other pieces (such as BumpList) made me wish more of the students from the Sociology of Cyberspace course I am TAing this term had come by. A smattering of (strangely disjointed?) questions followed regarding mainstream access and collaborative ownership-- I just enjoyed a moment to think about the collision of real and virtual spaces. The Saturday exhibition opens with a 3pm performance of SimpleTEXT, which if I understand correctly is a collaborative VJing performance.

I wanted to ask how someone who has worked extensively with tangible interfaces saw SimpleTEXT performance-- particularly since performance is commonly quite physical and expressive, and the means of 'performing' in this work is so narrowly bounded (on the surface). But I was just too damn sick-- *snork* -- I'll have to see for myself on Saturday.
