Street Screen Sprouting Scene (2008)
(with Lone Koefoed Hansen)
Mixed Media (sprouting paper, mounting board, reusable plexi-glass)
This work began as a documentation project of discarded devices, collected in Århus
(DK), Singapore (SI), London (UK), Vancouver (CA) and Montréal (CA), facilitated by the ubiquity of
mobile photography.
We wish to address the lack of sustainability (particularly in terms of
recycling practice and renewable design) of computing hardware in a poetic, yet
material way. The work consists of multiple layers of image strips, printed on seeded,
plantable paper with biodegradable ink. Viewers will be able to not only observe the
documented monitors, but tear off a strip of the image (the strips are layered up to 4
deep). This strip can be worn on either the breast or wrist to ‘raise awareness’ of the
issue of technological sustainability (a perhaps solely symbolic action), and then
subsequently planted (a symbolic, but also material action with identifiable
environmental impact).
